Sunset Sanctuary
A living memorial where trees, flowers, and open skies become part of a lasting legacy — for you, for your pets, and for the land itself.
What if saying goodbye wasn’t an ending — but a return to something living, growing, and beautiful for generations to come?
At Sunset Sanctuary in Farmington, Minnesota, we believe that every life deserves to be remembered in a way as unique and vital as the person — or beloved companion — who lived it. Nestled just south of the Twin Cities across 100 breathtaking acres of trees, wildflowers, and shimmering lakeside landscape, Sunset Sanctuary offers a one-of-a-kind memorial experience rooted in nature, dignity, and hope.
Whether you are planning ahead for yourself or honoring someone you love, Sunset Sanctuary invites you to become part of something larger than any single moment — a living landscape that grows, shelters wildlife, and quietly tells the story of those who rest within it.
A place where memory grows
Traditional memorials mark a place in stone. At Sunset Sanctuary, your memorial grows. Cremated remains — called cremains — are gently returned to the earth through our conservation-focused burial program, nourishing the very trees and plantings that surround each memorial site. Families choose from a variety of settings across our expansive property: lakeside clearings where the water catches the afternoon light, shaded woodland groves, or open meadows threaded with native wildflowers.
Every memorial site at Sunset Sanctuary contributes directly to the preservation and restoration of our 100-acre property — keeping it wild, beautiful, and permanently protected from development.
Your pets belong here too
We know that family doesn’t end at the human kind. Sunset Sanctuary is one of the very few memorial properties in the Twin Cities region that honors beloved pets alongside their people. Dogs, cats, and cherished companions of all kinds can find their resting place here, because the bonds we share with animals are no less real — and deserve no less care.
Four reasons families choose Sunset Sanctuary
Living memorials
Cremains nourish real trees and plantings that grow as enduring monuments to the lives they honor.
Lasting legacy
Your memorial site is part of a permanently protected conservation property, preserved for future generations.
Lakeside beauty

Pets welcome
One of the Twin Cities’ only memorial properties that welcomes beloved pets alongside their families.
Join our conservation mission
Sunset Sanctuary is more than a memorial property — it is an active conservation effort. By choosing a memorial here, families become stewards of the land itself, contributing to habitat restoration, native planting programs, and the long-term care of a Minnesota landscape that would otherwise be lost to development.
We welcome visitors to walk our trails, sit by the water, and experience the living landscape that their loved ones helped create. Grief has a way of softening when it is surrounded by growing things — by birdsong, by the rustle of leaves, by the simple fact that life continues and is made richer by those who came before.
“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
— John Muir
Come see it for yourself
Words can only say so much. There is something about standing at the edge of one of our meadows, watching the light move across the lake, that makes the idea of a living memorial feel less like a concept and more like a gift you can actually give — to the people you love, to the land, and to yourself.
We invite you to schedule a private visit, walk the property at your own pace, and ask every question that comes to mind. There is no pressure, no rush — only the quiet beauty of a place that was made to hold both sorrow and hope with equal grace.
